The Evolution of Optical Modules: Half-century Technological Advancement in Digital Communication

With the rapid development of global digitalization, network data exchange, cloud computing and artificial intelligence training run around the clock. As the core component of fiber-optic communication, optical modules realize mutual conversion between optical and electrical signals, and serve as the fundamental foundation connecting massive global data.

Goodmind Electronics is an integrated enterprise focusing on independent research, production and global sales. Our business covers communication equipment and analog transmission fields. Our main products include ONU, OLT, network switches and a full range of optical modules. We also develop and manufacture CATV transmission products and satellite-to-fiber conversion devices. With years of experience in the communication industry, we have witnessed and participated in the whole evolution of optical modules, from initial prototypes to high-speed computing era products.

The origin of optical modules dates back to groundbreaking optical technology breakthroughs in the 1960s. The invention of laser in 1960 provided a stable light source for optical signal transmission. Fiber-optic communication theory was proposed in 1966, breaking the speed limit of traditional electrical communication. In 1970, low-loss commercial optical fiber was successfully developed, turning optical communication from theoretical conception into practical technology.

Early original optical modules adopted simple structures, using light-emitting diodes and photodiodes to receive and transmit signals. The transmission speed was only tens of megabits to 155 megabits per second. The equipment was bulky and mainly applied to short-distance local area network communication. Despite limited performance, the core photoelectric conversion principle was established, laying a solid foundation for subsequent product iteration.

In the 1990s, the commercialization of the Internet stimulated surging demands for civil and commercial networks, pushing optical modules into the standardized era. The GBIC gigabit interface module launched in 1995 supported 1Gbps transmission speed and hot-swap function, becoming standard accessories for Ethernet devices. Soon after, compact and low-power SFP pluggable modules replaced old products and became mainstream. Meanwhile, 10G XFP modules were developed, preparing for the popularization of 10-gigabit networks.

Against expanding market demands, Goodmind Electronics built standardized production lines and launched compliant SFP optical modules. With stable quality and strong compatibility, our products gained recognition in European, American and Japanese markets, establishing steady position in the international communication supply chain.

From 2006 to 2017, cloud computing and big data drove explosive growth in bandwidth demands, accelerating the upgrade of high-speed optical modules. Commercial 10G SFP+ modules were widely deployed in data center server access. 40G and 100G high-speed modules were released successively, breaking speed limits via parallel transmission technology. The 100G QSFP28 module became the preferred choice for large-scale data center interconnection due to its compact size and balanced power consumption.

During this period, we completed comprehensive technical upgrades and formed a complete product line covering 10G to 100G optical modules. We achieved major progress in heat dissipation design and stable signal transmission. All products have passed CE, FCC, TELEC and other international certifications, complying with strict overseas standards. Supported by our self-produced ONU, OLT and switches, we provide integrated network solutions instead of single modules, creating distinctive competitive advantages.

Since 2018, the booming artificial intelligence industry and construction of hyperscale data centers have led optical modules into the ultra-high-speed stage. 400G optical modules have been widely used for high-density cluster interconnection, while 800G modules have become standard configuration for AI data centers with lower latency and optimized power consumption. Currently, 1.6T modules are under trial application, and R&D of 3.2T and 12.8T cutting-edge products is ongoing.

Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics reshape the whole industry. Silicon photonics technology integrates optical components and circuit chips to reduce size and power loss. CPO technology shortens signal transmission paths and improves operational efficiency. Keeping pace with technological trends, Goodmind Electronics independently developed 800G silicon photonics optical modules, which excel in low power consumption and heat management, perfectly meeting strict requirements of high-end data centers and AI computing clusters across Europe, America and Japan.

The application scope of optical modules keeps expanding beyond data centers. Industrial-grade 25G and 100G modules guarantee stable signal transmission for 5G bearer networks. 10-gigabit modules enhance household broadband experience in fiber-to-the-home services. Specialized modules ensure lossless long-distance transmission of high-definition signals in CATV broadcasting and satellite fiber conversion scenarios. Combined with our CATV and satellite transmission products, we satisfy diverse customized demands from different industries.

Optical module technology maintains rapid iteration. In the coming years, 1.6T modules will gain widespread popularity. Low-power driving technology and liquid cooling solutions will optimize product performance, and co-packaged optics will become mainstream industry technology.

Goodmind Electronics attaches great importance to independent innovation and continuously invests in silicon photonics and high-speed packaging research. We actively advance the R&D plan of new-generation 1.6T optical modules. In the future, we will further explore European, American and Japanese mainstream markets relying on our full-category products including optical modules, communication hosts and analog transmission equipment. With reliable products and mature integrated solutions, we will facilitate global network upgrading and march toward a new era of higher speed and higher integration in optical communication.
