Advantages of OLT

High bandwidth capacity

OLTs deliver high-speed data broadcasting and help fulfill the increasing needs for internet bandwidth in homes, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Scalability

Having the capacity to assist different ONUs/ONT per PON port, OLT products deliver constant network growth.

Effective resource usage

OLTs administer PON technology that lessens the requirement for active parts in the distribution network. Also, this device reduces power utilization and maintenance expenditure.

Assistance for trio play services

OLTs provide easy transmission of data, voice, and video services over an individual optical fiber and improve user experience.

Improved network administration

Latest OLTs provide strong network monitoring, fault scanning, and troubleshooting abilities and deliver the least downtime.

Reliability

Many OLT products are well-matched and reliable with future-generation PON standards, like GPON, XG-PON, and EPON, and provide durability.

Features of OLT

Conversion

OLTs convert optical fiber signals from passive optical networks (PONs) into electrical signals for processing.

Traffic management

OLTs manage traffic from Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) by assigning time slots or wavelengths to each device.

Bandwidth allocation

OLTs allocate bandwidth based on Quality of Service (QoS) and Service Level Agreement (SLA) requirements.

Diagnostic features

OLTs have diagnostic features such as statistics counters, ping and trace ont router, ONU loopback, optical monitoring, optical shutdown, and remote diagnosis.

Networking mode

OLTs can aggregate signals carrying various services at the office end, send signals to the access network, and send signals from the end user to various service networks.

Device management

OLTs can monitor and manage devices and ports, facilitate service provisioning, and monitor user status.

Component of OLT

01/

Central processing unit (CPU): The brain of the OLT, responsible for processing data, controlling all other components, and running the operating system.

02/

Passive optical network cards(PON cards): Also known as EPON Link Modules (ELMs), these cards handle communication with the Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or Optical Network Units (ONUs) on the subscriber side. They convert electrical signals from the OLT to optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables and vice versa.

03/

Gateway router (GWR): Connects the OLT to the core network of the service provider, allowing for internet traffic routing and communication with other networks.

04/

Voice gateway (VGW) uplink cards: It enables Voice over IP (VoIP) services handling voice traffic, converting signals into data for transmission over the networks and vice versa.
● Rack: Physical housing that holds all the other OLT components.

05/

Control and Switch Module (CSM): It directs data flow between the different components like CPU, PON cards, GWR, and VGW; managing data routing and switching in optical line terminations.

06/

Power modules: It provides power to the entire OLT system, which includes redundancy features to ensure uninterrupted operation in case of power supply failure.

Types of OLT

GPON OLT

One of the most common types of OLT is the GPON OLT. GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and is an implementation of PON that provides high bandwidth. GPON OLTs can deliver speeds up to 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream.

XGS-PON OLT

An emerging OLT technology is XGS-PON or 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network. XGS-PON supports 10 Gbps bandwidth both downstream and upstream, providing next generation speeds and capabilities.

NG-PON2 OLT

NG-PON2 or Next Generation Passive Optical Network 2 is another developing PON technology designed for high bandwidth and maximum flexibility. Rather than using a single wavelength, NG-PON2 utilizes multiple wavelengths over one fiber allowing up to 40 Gbps capacity.

WDM-PON OLT

WDM-PON or Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network is another approach that uses multiple wavelengths over a single fiber strand. It is based on the ITU-T G.983 standard.

SDN-Enabled OLT

More recent OLT models also take advantage of software-defined networking (SDN). SDN provides centralized control and programmability of the network. For OLTs, it enables remote management, monitoring and configuration.

Application of OLT
1

Telecommunications networks

These products are perfect for IT departments as they deliver high-speed internet and other communication services.

2

Enterprise networks

Thus, OLTs are considered the best for businesses and organization levels for delivering safe and secure, high-capacity connectivity.

3

Smart cities

The hardware is suitable for smart city technologies as they support IoT devices and smart infrastructure.

4

Cable TV allocation

These are ideal for connecting in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solutions.

Mounting Requirements of OLT

Choose a central office or data center with adequate space, cooling, and power supply. Ensure that the site has fiber connectivity to the outside plant (OSP) or distribution network. Most OLTs are designed to be rack-mounted. Ensure that your racks are organized, have enough space for the OLT’s cooling requirements, and allow for easy cable management.

FAQ

Q: What does OLT mean?

A: OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. An OLT is the device that serves as your ISPs endpoint of the passive optical network (PON).

Q: How does an OLT work?

A: In the PON network, the OLT is a vital component that acts as an interface between the ISP and the subscriber, serving as a crucial hardware endpoint. Its function is to communicate with the ONU on the user side through one or more ODN optical fiber distribution networks.

Q: Is OLT a switch or router?

A: In summary, OLT and switch are designed for different purposes within networking. OLTs are crucial in delivering high-speed broadband services over fiber optics, especially in PON architectures, while switches are fundamental components in LANs, facilitating communication between devices within the same network.

Q: How many ports are in OLT?

A: Typically, these OLTs are equipped with 2 to 16 downstream PON ports, each capable of connecting multiple ONUs. For instance, the FS 8-port OLT3610-08GP4S can theoretically connect up to 128 ONUs per PON port and supports 4 GE Combo ports and 4 10G SFP+ ports for uplink connections.

Q: What is the difference between OLT and PON?

A: A passive optical network(PON) includes an optical line terminal (OLT) installed in the central control station, and a group of matching optical network units (ONUs) installed in the user's premises.

Q: What is OLT application?

A: In a fiber optic network, an OLT (Optical Line Terminal) is a device used to aggregate and manage the optical signals from multiple Optical Network Unit (ONU)/Optical Network Terminal (ONT). Located at the service provider's site, it connects the core network to the distribution network.
