Conversion
OLTs convert optical fiber signals from passive optical networks (PONs) into electrical signals for processing.
Traffic management
OLTs manage traffic from Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) by assigning time slots or wavelengths to each device.

Component of OLT
Central processing unit (CPU): The brain of the OLT, responsible for processing data, controlling all other components, and running the operating system.
Passive optical network cards(PON cards): Also known as EPON Link Modules (ELMs), these cards handle communication with the Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or Optical Network Units (ONUs) on the subscriber side. They convert electrical signals from the OLT to optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables and vice versa.
Gateway router (GWR): Connects the OLT to the core network of the service provider, allowing for internet traffic routing and communication with other networks.
Voice gateway (VGW) uplink cards: It enables Voice over IP (VoIP) services handling voice traffic, converting signals into data for transmission over the networks and vice versa.

Control and Switch Module (CSM): It directs data flow between the different components like CPU, PON cards, GWR, and VGW; managing data routing and switching in optical line terminations.
Power modules: It provides power to the entire OLT system, which includes redundancy features to ensure uninterrupted operation in case of power supply failure.
GPON OLT
One of the most common types of OLT is the GPON OLT. GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and is an implementation of PON that provides high bandwidth. GPON OLTs can deliver speeds up to 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.25 Gbps upstream.
XGS-PON OLT
An emerging OLT technology is XGS-PON or 10 Gigabit Symmetrical Passive Optical Network. XGS-PON supports 10 Gbps bandwidth both downstream and upstream, providing next generation speeds and capabilities.
NG-PON2 OLT
NG-PON2 or Next Generation Passive Optical Network 2 is another developing PON technology designed for high bandwidth and maximum flexibility. Rather than using a single wavelength, NG-PON2 utilizes multiple wavelengths over one fiber allowing up to 40 Gbps capacity.
WDM-PON OLT
WDM-PON or Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network is another approach that uses multiple wavelengths over a single fiber strand. It is based on the ITU-T G.983 standard.
SDN-Enabled OLT
More recent OLT models also take advantage of software-defined networking (SDN). SDN provides centralized control and programmability of the network. For OLTs, it enables remote management, monitoring and configuration.
