Switches can be roughly divided into two types, WAN switches and LAN switches. Wide area network switches are used more in telecommunications areas to provide a platform for communication; and area network switches are used more in areas, mainly to connect some terminal equipment.
From the perspective of network composition, network switches can be divided into access layer switches, aggregation layer switches, and core layer switches.
According to the transmission medium and speed of switches, LAN switches can be subdivided into Ethernet switches, Fast Ethernet switches, Gigabit Ethernet switches, FDDI switches, and ATM switches.
According to the scale of switch use, it can be divided into enterprise-level, department-level, workgroup switches and so on. The structural characteristics of the switch are different, and the technicians divide the LAN switch into a rack type, a fixed configuration type with an expansion slot, and a fixed configuration type without an expansion slot.
According to the seven-layer network model of OSI, switches can be divided into switches with different layers from the first, second, third, and seventh layers.
If it is divided by the manageability of the switch, the switch can be divided into manageable and unmanageable switches. From the application point of view, it can be divided into telephone switches and data switches. Different operation modes from the processing frame of the switch can be divided into storage and forwarding and overview. There are various classifications of network switches, and these are just a few of them.
